The forecast high for May 5 in Sun Lakes is 105 degrees F. That’s pretty hot. Wheels down at 7 am at the Cottonwood Country Club Flag Pole for the last scheduled Sun Lakes Saturday Ride of the season. It might only be 75F at 7 am.
The PMBC Quarterly Meeting is May 19. I *may* post a ride from Sun Lakes to the meeting at the Hungry Monk (NE corner of Dobson and Chandler Blvd) for that date, once I learn when the meeting starts and what the weather forecast is.
Ride safely! Announce your turns well in advance. Call out and point out obstacles in your path to the riders behind you. Be predictable in your actions to motor vehicle operators. Approach intersections in the rightmost travel lanes that continue beyond the intersection in the direction you intend to go (in other words, don’t go to the intersection in the right turn lane if you intend to go straight through it). If you are approaching an intersection where a vehicle is approaching in the opposite direction that is signalling a left turn, continue pedaling if you don’t intend to stop and allow them to turn in front of you. Your pedaling motion tells them that you don’t intend to stop.

Please take a couple of minutes to watch the Safety Tip of the Week, a one minute nineteen second professionally done video on the proper techniques for letting others know when you are turning, changing lanes and stopping. Being more predictable to your fellow cyclists and motor vehicle drivers can make your riding safer for you and others.
It’s going to be a warm one. Wheels down at 7:00 am. Pace depends on who shows up. No Drop. Breakfast to follow TBD.

Today’s route takes us north through Oakwood and Ocotillo Lakes, Tumbleweed Park, and along the Paseo Trail briefly to circle the Islands of Gilbert. From there, we head cross-country around Downtown Chandler to visit the neighborhoods just east of the Price Freeway before heading south on a route as scenic as I could make it back to the start at Cottonwood Country Club in Sun Lakes. The forecast remains on the cool side (at least by Arizona standards) so we’ll have wheels down at 7:30 am. Total distance is 38.2 miles with a total climb of 121 feet. We might be back at Cottonwood in time for breakfast if we maintain a 14-16 mph pace and keep our stops relatively short.
If anyone is interested in helping to lead the Sun Lakes Saturday Rides starting in May and continuing through September, please let your ride leader know!
Today’s Safety Tip
Since most crashes happen at intersections, be sure to reduce your risk by being visible, positioning yourself clearly on the road, and making eye contact with other drivers.
When you are coming up to a multi-lane intersection, you want to be in the right-most lane that is traveling in the direction you intend to go. Where you are within the lane depends on the intersection. You do not want to be in the right-turn lane if you intend to travel straight ahead. Please watch this brief (1:45) video for more information about safe lane positioning: Smart Positioning Video from the League of American Bicyclists.

This ride takes us to the annual Spring Breakfast Party.
Wheels down at 7:30 am. The forecast is marvelous! It will be a fine day for a picnic.
If you’re planning to the Tour de Mesa today, have a ball! I expect that we’ll have pretty much the same weather without the excitement and about 2000 fewer riders. Today’s Sun Lakes Breakfast Ride has a total altitude gain of 140 feet over 25.3 miles. The weather forecast is overcast to mostly cloudy with a low of 70 degrees F around sunrise (at 6:08 am) and low to mid ’80’s by the end of the ride, an exceptional July day by Pittsburgh standards. It may become a bit breezy. Wheels down at 7:30 am with breakfast to follow the ride at the Cottonwood Country Club in Sun Lakes. The group will proceed at a comfortable pace for the slowest rider. It is a no-drop social ride.
Today’s route goes north on Dobson to the Western Canal Trail, east to the Islands of Gilbert, and then south to the Galveston Bike Route and Paseo Trail to Ocotillo. We go back west on Ocotillo to Dobson and return to Sun Lakes. The day is expected to be a warm one, with overcast skies and no chance of rain.
To beat the heat, we’ll have wheels down at 7:30 am.
This weeks’ route takes us north from Sun Lakes around the Phil Mickelson designed Ocotillo golf course on Jacaranda and then southeast to the Sun Groves neighborhood, returning to Cottonwood via Hunt Highway. Breakfast is at the Cottonwood Country Club restaurant. Wheels down at 8:30 am. The weather forecast is partly cloudy and 68 degrees Fahrenheit at 10:00 am with light winds of 3-5 mph and almost no chance of precipitation.
